Tri-Beta wins prestigious national award!

The Bloomsburg University chapter of the Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) Biology Honor Society was notified recently that it was awarded the Lloyd M. Berthold Award for outstanding chapter during the 2018-2019 academic year. Tri-Beta is a a national honor society with over 430 chapters across the United States.  The mission of Tri-Beta is to stimulate scholarship, to disseminate scientific knowledge, and to promote biological research. The Bertholf award is presented to the chapter that best exemplifies this mission. The Bertholf Committee bases the award on the following criteria:  productivity if members in conducting and publishing research, participation in scientific meetings, chapter programs and activities, and organized record keeping and communication with the National Office.

In 2018-2019, the Bloomsburg University Chapter hosted the Northeast District Regional Convention, a well-attended event that featured student research presentations, a keynote address, and of course, a biology trivia contest!  Over the past few years, our chapter hosted Mock Interviews, gave a reception for graduating seniors, supplied coffee and donuts during finals week, provided weekly tutoring sessions for students in introductory biology courses, donated to both a national and local research scholarship, sponsored a BAHS student to attend a national scientific conference, held activities for residents at a nursing home, held Biology Trivia Nights, helped Girl Scouts earn badges, and provided activities for children at the Sibling and Children’s Weekend Carnival.

The Bloomsburg University chapter currently has over 40 undergraduate and graduate student members and 13 faculty members. New members are typically initiated each October. Drs. Abby Hare-Harris and Surmacz are co-advisors. Congratulations go out to all members of Tr-Beta, past and present, for their continuing enthusiasm and support of the three aims of Tri-Beta, stimulating scholarship, promoting research, and disseminating biological knowledge.
