Kyle Mausteller named a finalist for the Syed R. Ali-Zaidi Award

Kyle Mausteller, a senior Biology, pre-medical science major and chemistry minor from Benton, PA, was named a finalist for the Syed R. Ali -Zaidi Award for Academic Excellence. The award is presented to a graduating senior in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education who has excelled in and out of the classroom. Dr. Ali-Zaidi, a charter member of the Board of Governors, established the award to inspire and honor outstanding students in the State System. Kyle was nominated for the award by Bloomsburg University President Bashar Hanna. The winner will be announced by the Board of Governors later this year.

Kyle, a member of the Bloomsburg University Honors College, has received a number of awards and scholarships including the Dr. Frederick R. Maue 1976 Scholarship, the Dr. Stephen Schell Scholarship, the Supervisory Roundtable Endowed Scholarship, and the Board of Governor’s Scholarship.  Kyle conducted research on chromosomal telomere replication in the laboratory of Dr. Kate Beishline. To support his research Kyle was awarded several grants including the College of Science and Technology Professional Experience Grant, and an Undergraduate Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities Award (URSCA) and a Beta Beta Beta Undergraduate Research grant. Kyle presented his research results at the Tri-Beta District II Convention. 

Kyle, a dean's list student, was inducted into Beta Beta Beta, the biology honor society, and served as the group's president. He was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi interdisciplinary honor society.  Kyle is a Board of Governor's Scholar and a mentor and member of the Advisory Board. Kyle studied abroad in Poland as part of the honors program.  He was a member of Alpha Phi Omega Brother, the National Co-ed Service Fraternity, where he  has served as the co-chair of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Committee and  the past 2 semesters and provided over a 100 hours of community service. As the Service Co-chair of the Pre-medical Sciences Club, Kyle spearheaded several community service opportunities for members such as a a lunch packing event for head-start children, work at the Bloomsburg Food Cupboard, and a fundraiser to support the purchase of mosquito nets to prevent malaria for children in Haiti. In the community, he has volunteered at the Bloomsburg Children's Museum, Ronald McDonald House, Relay for Life, Breast Cancer Walk, and Dodge Out Cancer.


Kyle has extensive experience in healthcare.  He was selected to participate in the  Penn State Primary Care Scholars Program in Hershey, PA, a 2-week program where he had the opportunity to explore current trends and issues in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics. He has also shadowed a pediatrician and had the opportunity to observe outpatient visits, nursery rounds and labor and delivery. He has also volunteered at Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital. Kyle will attend medical school at Penn State College of Medicine at Hershey, PA. Congratulations Kyle!
