Allison Sowers and Kyle Mausteller receive Dr. Stephen E. Schell Award

Recipients of the 2019-20120 Schell award: Allison Sowers and Kyle Mausteller Two BAHS students, Allison Sowers and Kyle Mausteller ,  have been named recipients of the Dr. Stephen E. Schell Award. This award was generously established by  Dr. Stephen E. Schell, MD (BS Biology, 1975), a board certified otolaryngologist and graduate of Temple University School of Medicine. Funding provided by the award assists pre-medical science students in preparing for osteopathic or allopathic medical school by helping to defray the cost of a preparatory course or materials for the Medical College Admission Test. Allison, is a biology, pre-medical sciences major and dean’s list student. She is the public relations chair of the Pre-medical Science Club and member of Colleges Againsts Cancer. Allison has extensive healthcare experience. She has shadowed a pediatrician, at Hanover Pediatrics, interned at Summit Health, and observed at Wellspan Gettysburg Hospital. Graduate Students Present Thesis Proposals

Rodelin Duteste, Kyle Flannery,  and Ian Whiteside,  BAHS master's students, presented thesis proposals on May 9, 2019.  A diverse group of proposals were presented covering topics ranging from telomeres and G proteins to language development in individuals with autism spectrum disorder. The specific  projects shared include: Rodelin Dutest e. Evaluating the effect of the G-protein subunit Gamma-10 on the  melanoma development and metastasis using CRISPR/Cas 9. Mentor:  Dr. William Schwindinger Kyle Flannery . Quantitative analysis of Language Development in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Related Genetic Disorders. Mentor:  Dr. Abby Hare-Harris . Dr. Lauri Green Dr. Angela Hess Dr. Hranitz Congratulations to Drs. Andrew Cross receives Outstanding Senior in Biology Award

Andrew Cross, Outstanding senior in Biology,  in the research lab.  Andrew Cross,  a biology, pre-medical science major and chemistry minor from Benton, PA was named outstanding senior in biology.  Andrew graduated summa cum laude in May 2019 as one of the College of Science and Technology Honor Graduates, with a perfect 4.0 GPA.   Andrew was active in undergraduate research.He investigated oxidative stress in honey bees exposed to sublethal doses of neonicotinoid pesticides. Drs. Surmacz and Hranitz were his mentors. To support his research Andrew received three research grants from  the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania University Biologists (CPUB), Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society, and a Bloomsburg University Professional Experience Grant. He has presented the results of his work at the annual CPUB meeting held at Edinboro University, where he earned first prize in the Organismal Biology poster division. Emily Ashberry presents research at international meeting

Emily Ashberry delivers an oral presentation at the Society for Freshwater Science meeting in Salt Lake City, UT. Emily Ashberry, M.S. biology student working in the laboratory of  Dr. Steven Rier , gave an oral presentation at the Society for Freshwater Science annual meeting in Salt Lake City. Her presentation was entitled “Understanding the environmental context of algal priming of coarse particulate organic matter decomposition in streams”, which focused on her thesis project.  Emily will be the first student to complete the new 3+2 B.S./M.S. in biology program.

Kyle Mausteller Kyle Mausteller  is the recipient of the Dr. Frederick Maue 1976 Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a student in the BS Biology Pre-medical Sciences curriculum. Kyle, a rising senior, is a dean’s list student and member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society. Kyle is a member of the BU Honors Program. Kyle is active on campus holding membership in Alpha Phi Omega, BAHS club and the pre-medical sciences club. He is board member and mentor of Board of Governors. Kyle conducts his honors research in Dr. Kate Beishline's Laboratory on the role of Subtelomeric CTCF in Telomere Stability. He recently presented his research at the Northeast District 2 Tri-Beta Convention and the College of Science and Technology Research Day. Danielle James is awarded Dr. James E. Parsons Scholarship

Danielle James Danielle James , a health sciences, pre-pharmacy major and chemistry minor, has been awarded the James E. Parsons Scholarship. The scholarship was established by Dr. Parsons, retired professor of microbiology, faculty emeritus, and former director of the medical laboratory science program at BU. Danielle, a dean’s list student, is an Orientation Workshop Leader and an active member of Phi Sigma Pi, Best Buddies, and Wishmakers. Danielle plans to Work as a pharmacy technician this summer to gain experience in the pharmacy field. She plans to attend graduate school to receive a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and eventually work as a clinical pharmacist. Congratulations Danielle!

Gabrielle Piccolo Kathryn Sherry Gabrielle Piccolo and Kathryn Sherry were awarded Biological and Allied Health Sciences Scholarships for the 2019-2020 academic year. Gabrielle   Piccolo is a Health Science, pre-physician assistant major and psychology minor. Gabrielle is a member of BU's Varsity Women's Lacrosse Team. In the community she volunteers for AGAPE and the Big Event. She serves the Cohen Children's Medical Center as a Child Life Volunteer.  Gabrielle will gain healthcare experience this summer working a Nursing Assistant . She plans to continue her education in a Physician’s Assistant graduate program and earn a Master’s degree.  Kathryn Sherry is a Biology, pre-medical sciences major. Dr. James E Cole Scholarship awarded to Katelyn Boyer

Katelyn Boyer The  Dr.  James E. Cole Scholarship  was established in 2003 by Dr. James Cole, professor emeritus and former chairperson of the Department of Biological and Allied Health Sciences. Dr. Cole was instrumental in establishing allied health programs in the department. This scholarship supports medical imaging majors.  This year's recipient is  Katelyn Boyer,  a Medical Imaging major from Reading, PA. Katelyn was presented with the Dr. James E. Cole Scholarship at the BAHS Honors Brunch and Awards Ceremony by Dr. William Coleman, her professor in Anatomy and Physiology.  Katelyn plans to complete her clinical experience in Ohio or West Virginia to become certified as a radiologist.  She plans to  specialize in radiation therapy. Congratulations Katelyn!

Kaitlyn Gresko is named Outstanding Senior in Allied Health

Kaitlyn Gresko Kaitlyn Gresko  was selected as Outstanding Senior in Allied Health Sciences by the Department of Biological and Allied Health Sciences in recognition of her scholarship, leadership, and service. Katie, a pre-physician assistant major will enroll in the physician assistant master’s program at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine-Georgia Campus. She completed the Biology 302 practicum at Geisinger Medical Center  and was a nursing assistant at Geisinger and at Abington Surgical Center. Katie is a dean's list student and recently graduated cum laude. Katie  was inducted in Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. She has extensive leadership experience serving as the president of Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society and as a mentor in the Health Sciences Learning Community.  Her campus activities have included the Biology and Allied Health Club and Best Buddies.Katie has served the greater community as a volunteer at the Big Event, Beth
