2019 Health Sciences Symposium focuses on Brain Injury

"Brain Injury" was the theme of the 28th Annual Health Sciences Symposium held at Bloomsburg University on April 11 and 12, 2019.  The event was kicked off by the keynote address at Mitrani Hall at the Haas Center for the Performing Arts.   The keynote address was delivered by Christopher C. Giza, M.D., of the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center.   His address  entitled " "Standing Tall in the Radical Middle of Sports Concussion" was presented to an audience of over 500 students, faculty and community members. 

Dr. Giza , pictured at left, is a graduate of  Dartmouth College and earned his M.D. from West Virginia University. He interned at the University of Pennsylvania, trained in Adult and Pediatric Neurology at UCLA, and worked on the Yosemite Search and Rescue team. Presently, Dr. Giza is Professor of Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine and Mattel Children’s Hospital and director of the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT program.  He is the co-chair of the American Academy of Neurology committee that introduced evidence-based Practice Guidelines for Management of Sports Concussions. Dr. Giza is on the advisory committees for Traumatic Brain Injury/concussion with the CDC, NCAA, MLS and USSF, and has been a clinical consultant for the NFL, NHL and MLS. 

The Health Sciences Symposium continued on Friday, April 12 at Kehr Union for a day of professional presentations on topics related to Brain Injury and over 90 poster presentations by undergraduate and graduate students. The Wellness Fair featured over 30 exhibitors, providing opportunities to learn about area health organizations,to take part in health screenings, and to explore services available at Bloomsburg University and the surrounding community. A great time was had by all!
