BAHS students attend SICB meeting

Image
Sean Hartzell Cody Pavlick BAHS students and faculty traveled to San Francisco, CA during winter break to attend the annual meeting of the Society for Integrative Biology (SICB). SICB is a national professional organization whose mission is to promote research in many fields of specialization in biology from molecules and cells to ecology and evolution. SICB supports biology education and scholarship at all levels, from Kindergarten to postgraduate. SICB strives to inform the public, policy makers, and grant agencies of new knowledge in biology and its potential applications. Research is presented in a series of plenary sessions, symposia, workshops, exhibits, and oral and written poster sessions. The theme of the 2018 conference was on Science Communication. Presenting research at the 2018 SICB meeting this year were BAHS undergraduates Cody Pavlick and Joshua Petersheim, graduate student Bradley Ohlinger, and faculty members Sean Hartzell, John Hranitz, and Cindy Surmacz.

Morgan Ilgenfritz, Erin Smith, Dhir Gala Pre-med students Morgan Ilgenfritz, Erin Smith and Dhir Gala spent part of their winter break participating in Jan Plan.  This program at  Geisinger Medical Center brings students into the hospital for an intensive 9-day experience that provides a    first hand look at the medical profession. Jan Plan students have the opportunity to interact with medical students, residents, and physicians during rounds, case study discussions, and observations. Morgan, Erin, and Dhir had the opportunity to explore sixteen different specialties: Pathology, Emergency Medicine, Dermatology, Critical Care, Urology, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, Cardiology, General, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Pediatrics, Neurology, Radiology, Anesthesiology, and Pain Medicine. Dhir  appreciated the opportunity to gain "a holistic view of the role of the physician," noting that his favorite areas were surgery and cardiology. Erin enjoyed pediatrics and neurology
