Pre-med Students take on Jan Plan

Pre-med students Morgan Ilgenfritz, Erin Smith and Dhir Gala spent part of their winter break participating in Jan Plan.  This program at Geisinger Medical Center brings students into the hospital for an intensive 9-day experience that provides a  first hand look at the medical profession. Jan Plan students have the opportunity to interact with medical students, residents, and physicians during rounds, case study discussions, and observations. Morgan, Erin, and Dhir had the opportunity to explore sixteen different specialties: Pathology, Emergency Medicine, Dermatology, Critical Care, Urology, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics, Cardiology, General, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, Pediatrics, Neurology, Radiology, Anesthesiology, and Pain Medicine. Dhir  appreciated the opportunity to gain "a holistic view of the role of the physician," noting that his favorite areas were surgery and cardiology. Erin enjoyed pediatrics and neurology, in particular. She felt that the experience gave her "an idea of what being a physician is like in a hospital setting and all of the different people involved in the care of a patient." She also found it helpful to talk to medical students, residents, and admissions advisers about the  medical school admission process. Morgan found that the experience solidified her decision to pursue medicine as a a career, allowing her to "discover my passion for the application of science in a patient care setting." Morgan's favorite departments were orthopedics and interventional pain medicine since they complement her interests in anatomy and neurophysiology. Using adjectives to describe Jan Plan such as  "amazing," "incomparable," insightful, " and "useful," our BAHS students  certainly had a  unique and rewarding experience that will prepare them for the future.
