Drs. Hess earns promotion

Dr. Angela Hess, BAHS Department chairperson
Dr. Angela Hess, department chairperson, was recently promoted to the rank of professor. Dr. Hess earned her Ph.D. in Anatomy and Cell Biology with a focus on Molecular Medicine from the University of Iowa.  At BU, she teaches Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Introduction to Nutrition, Medical Terminology, and Cancer Biology. Her research explores the molecular mechanisms of melanoma development and has involved both undergraduate and graduate students. To support this work, Dr. Hess and her students have garnered research grants from the the Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania University, Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society, Bloomsburg University, and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.  Her students have presented their results at the College of Science and Technology's annual Research Day and at many regional and state conferences. Dr. Hess and Dr. Venditti were instrumental in acquiring a Zeiss Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope to advance research in the department.  She has published chapters on the Integumentary System and on Nutrition and Metabolism in "Anatomy and Physiology in Context" an ebook by TopHat Publishing. On campus, Dr. Hess has served as a member of the Faculty Professional Development Committee, the chair of  the University Wide Promotion Committee,  the president of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and the co-director of the Middle States Standards Sub-working group. She is BU's faculty representative to the PASSHE Faculty Professional Development Committee.  Dr. Hess and Dr. Venditti are faculty advisers of the BAHS club, She directs ABLE, the Academic Biology Learning Environment along with Dr. Surmacz. In the community, Dr. Hess serves as a member of the advisory committee for the Geisinger School of Radiologic Technology, is a science fair judge at Bloomsburg Area Middle School, and provides programs with the BAHS club at the Bloomsburg Children’s Museum.
