BAHS bids a fond farewell to Dr. Carl Hansen

Dr. Carl A. Hansen
Dr. Carl A. Hansen, professor of Biological and Allied Health Sciences, was feted at a reception on July 19, 2019 as he retired after 18 years at Bloomsburg University. Dr. Hansen has accepted a position as professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida Atlanta University, a public university with a main campus in Boca Raton. He will teach courses in Human Morphology and Physiology in the honors college at FAU's Jupiter campus. Dr. Hansen began his career at Bloomsburg University in 2001. He earned his Ph.D. in Physiology from Penn State Hershey and conducted post-doctoral research in the laboratory of Dr. John R. Williamson in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the faculty at Bloomsburg, Dr. Hansen was a senior research scientist at the Weis Center for Research at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, PA. During the course of his career he has published over 45 articles with his collaborators and his work has been cited over 1500 times. His current research, conducted while on sabbatical in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University, examined the role of G-protein signaling in angiogenesis, the process of blood vessel formation. 

At Bloomsburg, Dr. Hansen was active in several university-wide organizations, serving on the Promotion Committee, Budget and Planning Committee. and Middle States Accreditation subgroup.  In the department, Dr. Hansen led or held membership in a number of committees including, equipment, promotion, graduate, planning, and facilities.   Along with Dr. Kipe-Nolt, he developed and received full approval for the new Certificate Program in Medical Genomics and Genetic Counseling. He has worked to expand Genetic Counseling Internships with the Department of Genetic Counseling at Geisinger Clinic. 

Dr. Hansen taught courses in Human Genetics, Human Physiology, Anatomy & Physiology Laboratories, Medical Terminology, Human Biology, Cell Biology laboratories, Developmental Biology, Integrated Physiology Laboratory, and Comparative Animal Physiology.  As a teacher he is known for his enthusiasm for and knowledge of a broad range of biomedical topics, his emphasis on critical thinking and writing, and his ability to engage students. His colleagues appreciated his ideas and insights, warmth and good humor, and dedication to the success of the department. We will miss you Dr. Hansen!
