Dr. Stephen Schell Award Winners Announced

Daniel Deignan
Two BAHS students, Daniel Deignan and Nathan Feiertag, have been named recipients of the Dr. Stephen E. Schell Award. This award was generously established by Dr. Stephen E. Schell, MD (BS Biology, 1975), a board certified otolaryngologist and graduate of Temple University School of Medicine. Funding provided by the award assists pre-medical science students in preparing for osteopathic or allopathic medical school by helping to defray the cost of a preparatory course or materials for the Medical College Admission Test.
Nathan Feiertag
Dan, a biology, pre-medical sciences major and dean’s list student,  is active in the Pre-Medical Sciences club and served as the public relations officer during his junior year. He is also a member of Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society. He volunteers as a member of the Bloomsburg Geisinger Hospital Auxiliary where he interacts with staff and patients. In addition, Dan is also certified in CPR. Dan is an Eagle Scout and serves as an Eagle Advisor.  He also participates in the Sons of the American Legion.  Dan  plans to attend medical school.  

 Nate, a B.S. Biology, pre-medical sciences major and chemistry minor, was inducted into both TriBeta, the biology honor society and Phi Kappa Phi, the national honor society. He received a Phi Kappa Phi  recognition award for outstanding performance in the freshmen year. Nathan is the vice-president of Tri-Beta and was elected vice-president of the Pre-Medical Sciences Club.Nathan was a member of the BU Varsity basketball team and was recognized as a scholar athlete.   Nathan was a research scholar at Lehigh Valley Hospital where he worked in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology to assess the reliability of a videotaping technology tool for assessing the surgical competencies of residents in laparoscopy. He has shadowed at Sacred Heart Hospital and a Lehigh Valley Hospital, volunteered at Maria Joseph Continuing Care Community, and is a certified EMT.  Nathan plans to attend medical school.

BAHS medical imaging majors gained valuable experience with various imaging technologies  during internships at Geisinger Health System.   Intern Ashley Wilkins  reports: "I  have been able to see so much in the Radiology field. I have observed general diagnostic radiology, MRI, CAT scan, and ultrasound. I have seen x-rays of different body parts, especially of the chest. I have also seen numerous MRIs of the brain and spine and CAT scans of the chest and abdomen. Lastly, I have seen many pregnancy ultrasounds. Penn State Primary Care Scholars Program

The Penn State College of Medicine Primary Care Scholars’ Program is an exceptional opportunity for those who are interested in attending medical school and specializing in primary care. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s program will be held virtually and will kick off the week of  May 17, 2021  followed by a series of evening sessions over the weeks that follow.  The Primary Care Scholars’ Program will include discussions on topics such as medical care, primary care, medical school admissions, and the medical school’s curriculum.  Participants will have opportunities to interact with medical students and faculty, and to learn about the philosophy and practice of primary care within the disciplines of family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. The format will include large group presentations, small discussion groups, panel discussions with medical students, individual application consults, and a sample problem based learning session.  In previous years, the pr

Dr. Stefanie Kroll, stream ecologist, presents seminar

Seminar speaker Dr. Stefanie Kroll with host Dr. Steve Rier, professor Dr. Stefanie Kroll, Assistant Research Professor, in the Department of Biodiversity, Earth and Environmental Science at Drexel University shared her expertise  on   aquatic macroinvertebrate ecology at the BAHS seminar series on November 1, 2019. Dr. Kroll's talk was entitled"  Macroinvertebrates Tell All: Indicators of Human Impacts on Streams" Dr. Kroll is the    project science director of the Delaware River Watershed Initiative, a collaboration among over 50 nonprofit groups working in watershed conservation. She has a PhD in ecology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY.
