Congratulations to Dr. Chamuris on his retirement!

Dr. George Chamuris, professor, recently retired from Bloomsburg University after 33 years of service. Dr. Chamuris earned an A.A.S. from Dutchess Community College, a B.S. from State University of New York at Albany, an M.S., from James Madison University, and a Ph.D. from State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Dr. Chamuris's research interests lie in the areas of mycology, botany, evolution, and ecology, with a focus on bark ecology and public environmental education. He has mentored both undergraduate and graduate students in research projects on bark ecology over many years. Several of his research students have gone on to earn doctorates. His "Hiker's Guide to the Trees, Shrubs, and Vines of Rickett's Glen State Park" is the result of decades of exploring the 13,000 acre park in Columbia, Luzerne, and Sullivan counties. This guide, initially funded by a Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education grant and published by the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, is now in its 6th edition. Dr. Chamuris led the department as chairperson for several years during a period of growth and expansion.  His leadership was instrumental in maintaining, assessing, and revising curricula, strategic planning, and directing department activities.  We appreciate his tireless efforts, strong advocacy, and dedication that greatly benefitted the department and its students.

Dr. Chamuris taught a diverse array of classes for non-majors to graduate students in content that spans the cellular to ecosystem levels. These included Evolution; Cells, Genes and Molecules; Human Genetics, Comparative Biology of Plants, Dendrology; and Current Topics: Evolutionary Genetics. He was sought after as a guest lecturer by other departments in the university. As a teacher, Dr. Chamuris was known for the high quality of his course materials that draw from the primary literature, his emphasis on critical thinking, and his modified Socratic method.

Dr. Chamuris has recently been named by Bloomsburg University as Professor Emeritus. Congratulations on receiving this honor! We will miss you Dr. Chamuris! We hope you enjoy some extra time hiking and photographing at Ricketts Glen.
