Dr. James McCllntock hosted by BU


In November, Bloomsburg University had the honor of hosting Dr. James McClintock, the endowed  professor of polar and marine biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. McClintock presented a pubic lecture entitled "From penguins to plankton: the dramatic effects of climate change on the Antarctic Peninsula"  and a seminar on "Drug Discovery in Antarctic Seas." Dr. McClintock also met with students in Dr. Wood's ecology class, Dr. Green's Conservation and Biodiversity class, and BU's Honors Program. Dr. McClintock shared his expertise on climate change, ocean acidification, Antarctic marine ecology, chemical ecology, and invertebrate nutrition and reproduction. He is a recipient  of the Scientific Commission for Antarctic Research Medal for Education and Communication. In 1988, a a cape in Antarctica was named "McClintock Point" in his honor by the US Board of Geographic Names. Dr. McClintock has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and research. He has written two acclaimed books, Lost Antarctica: Adventures in a Disappearing Land and A Naturalist Goes Fishing.  Dr. McClintock has authored over  250 scientific publications and has been featured in media outlets such as National Geographic Magazine, Discover Magazine, CNN, Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times.  Dr. McClintock recently returned from his 15th research expedition to Antarctica funded by the National Science Foundation. Hosting Dr. McClintock, was Dr. Thomas Klinger. Drs. McClintock and Klinger  attended graduate school together at the University of South Florida.  CoST, BAHS and EGGS sponsored Dr. McClintock's visit, an event made more exciting by an an unusual November snowstorm in Bloomsburg.
