Abigail Geisinger Premedical Clinical Experiences Program

  Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, a Bloomsburg University affiliate, is currently accepting student applications for the Abigail Geisinger Premedical Clinical Experiences Program. This 5-week, 30-hour per week program running from July 12, 2021 through August 13, 2021 (Monday through Friday) exposes students to the clinical environment at Geisinger through observation in five areas of medicine, which may include but are not limited to: Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Trauma Surgery, Family Medicine, and Internal Medicine (Hospitalist).  Sites included in the Pre-medical Clinical Experience Program are Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA, Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA.  For applications, please contact Drs. Surmacz or Ardizzi as soon as possible . The deadline to apply is April 19.

Dr. Beishline recognized for research excellence

Dr. Kate Beishline Dr. Kate Beishline, assistant professor, Department of Biological and Allied Health Sciences, has received the Provost's   Award for Excellence in Research/Scholarly Activity. This award recognizes the scholarly achievements of probationary Bloomsburg University faculty. Dr. Beishline was nominated for this award by the dean of the College of Science and Technology. She is one of only four recipients of the award for the 2020-2021 academic year. Dr. Beishline's current research focuses on  pathways that regulate the transcription and replication of eukaryotic telomeres.  Her active research program has involved both undergraduate and graduate students. Her students have presented their research at various local and regional venues.   Dr. Beishline earned her B.S. from the University of the Sciences and her Ph.D. from Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. James McClintock to present seminar on the impacts of climate change on the Antarctica peninsula

  BAHS is delighted to welcome back Dr. James McClintock for an invited seminar entitled: From Adele's Penguins to Plankton--The Dramatic Impacts of Climate Change on the Antarctic Peninsula and What it Means for All of Us on friday, March 12 at 3 pm on zoom (see details below) Dr. McClintock is the Endowed University Professor of Polar and Marine Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  He received his doctoral degree from the University of South Florida (1984).  In 1987, after completing a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of California at Santa Cruz, he joined the faculty of the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  Dr. McClintock’s research has been funded continuously over the past 30 years by the National Science Foundation and focuses on aspects of marine invertebrate nutrition, reproduction, and primarily, Antarctic marine chemical ecology.  Over the past fifteen-years his research has also encompa

BAHS students participate in VIRTUAL Mock Interviews

 T ri-Beta Biology Honor Society sponsored Mock Interviews virtually on zoom. This was a great opportunity for students applying to medical school, graduate school, physician assistant programs and medical imaging clinical programs to gain valuable experience in how to conduct themselves in a professional interview. Students were provided with two interviews where they reflected on their strengths and weakness, practiced their communication skills, and mastered their nerves. Following the interviews faculty interviewers provided students with constructive feedback and offered pointers for a for successful interview.   Participating students were: Kaitlyn Beechay, Spencer Blank, Isabelle Blosser, Vanessa Brouse, Shannon Creveling, Rosella Delgado, ridget Finniff, Manuel Gutierrez, Allison Hartwick, Robert Hogan, Emmanuela Joseph, Nicole Kibui, Emily Martelliti, Eric Moeller. Dr. Brandan Gray presents a fascinating seminar on Ecomorphology

  It was a pleasure to welcome back Dr. Brandan Gray , a alumnus of our department's Masters program in Biology. Dr. Gray, a graduate of nearby Lycoming College, conducted his masters thesis research in Dr. Clay Corbin 's lab. After earning his Ph.D. at Ohio University, Dr. Gray is presently on the faculty of the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio. HIs talk, entitled "Studying the Fascinating Evolutionary Interplay among Ecology, Morphology, and Behavior using Wild Warblers, Captive Geckos, and Domesticated Insects" presented a fascinating look at how life is shaped by studying the mechanisms driving this incredible diversity. Comfort Nyesuah and Brianna  Ormiston have been accepted to Drexel University's Accelerated Nursing program.  Brooke Calle is attending Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University. Amy Yanalavage is attending Seton Hall University for a Masters in Healthcare Administration.

Dr. Alex Rohacek kicks off spring semester seminar series

Dr. Alex Rohacek, from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, kicked off the spring semester 2021 BAHS seminar series with an excellent talk on " In Sickness and Health: Understanding the Genetics of Sleep." Dr. Rohacek, invited by Dr. Hilary DeBardeleben, discussed his work in the genetics of sleep using the C.elegans model.  

Wetland Plants at Ricketts Glen State Park

The Field Biology Club recently hosted Dr. George Chamuris , professor emeritus, Department of Biological and Allied Health Sciences, to speak about the wetland plants of Ricketts Glen.  Ricketts Glen State Park lies on over 13,000 acres in  Columbia, Luzerne, and Sullivan counties. It contains over 20 miles of hiking trails  and is home to   the  Glens Natural Area, a National Natural Landmark, and 22 named waterfalls.  Dr. Chamuris's publication  Hiker's Guide to the Trees, Shrubs and Vines of Ricketts Glen State Park , is now in its 6th edition. Mr. Kenneth Roszel, Director of Geisinger's Radiologic Technology Program, honored by BU

  Mr. Ken Roszel Mr. Kenneth Roszel , the Director of the Radiologic Technology (RT) program at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC), was honored recently as a Professional U champion. Mr. Roszel was nominated for this award by Dr. Angela Hess, BAHS chairperson , for his role in promoting professional and career development opportunities for our students. The RT program at GMC only accepts about 10 students per year and most of the students are undergraduate s in the Medical Imaging program at BU. Geisinger’s RT program is one of the best in the area , and d ue to the educational team that Mr. Roszel has assembled to t rain our students , 95 % of the students pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists board examination. Although this is exceptional and provides stellar job opportunities for our graduates from the program, Mr. Roszel has been instrumental in providing internships and job shadowing experiences for our Medical Imaging students.
